We pour slabs for carports, camper and boat covers, additions and outbuildings in Gonzales and Ascension Parish. Post footings and anchors follow the cover supplier's plan. Building floors follow the flood height on your permit.
Carports are part of the landscape in Ascension Parish, from the attached ones on older Gonzales homes to new metal covers for a camper, a boat or farm equipment. The slab under them has two jobs. It is a parking floor, and it carries the posts. We pour thickened footings under each post location and set anchors to the cover supplier's layout, so the frame bolts down to concrete designed for it.
Slabs for a house or an addition are engineered work. The drawings give the beam layout, the steel and the floor height, and the permit office checks elevation. The Ascension Parish drainage notice calls for the finished floor to be 2 feet above the required flood level, and it says the finished floor of an attached garage over 500 square feet must meet that height too. Gonzales asks for a proposed elevation certificate with the application.
An addition slab meets an existing house, and that joint is where problems start. The new slab sits on fresh fill, the old one has been in place for years, and the clay treats them differently. We follow the engineer's detail for that connection and never dowel into a post-tensioned slab without approval. For open carports we slope the floor toward the open side so blown rain drains out.
House and carport slabs in Gonzales: common questions
Does a carport slab need a permit?
The cover usually does, as a structure, and the slab is reviewed with it. Ascension Parish publishes a residential accessory structure permit application. Inside Gonzales, ask the Building Department. We confirm before forming.
How thick is a slab for a camper or a motorhome?
Thicker than a car slab, with more steel, and the exact section depends on the vehicle's weight and the soil. Give us the loaded weight and we size it. The approach from the driveway has to carry the same load.
Can you pour the slab if another company puts up the building?
Yes. That is a common arrangement. Send us the building supplier's anchor and footing plan before we form, so bolts and thickened areas land in the right places.
